Review Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker (1999)

genre: animation, super hero, action, science fiction

In one word. Fantastic! This animated movie is darker and gloomier than the series was and all because of the Joker. He seems to have that effect wherever he turns up. Mark Hamill voices the Joker as usual.Who is kidding who? Mark Hamill is the Joker. (No disrespect to Jack Nicholson, he is a good actor but his Joker wasn't that different from all the other roles he played. It was like Jack  with make up. Heath Ledger was excellent but maybe a little too dark and different from the comics. Hamill nailed it. I saw some clips on youtube of him doing the voices and the laugh. No doubt that if he were ever to play a live action role as The Joker he would annihilate the other performers.)  I wasn't expecting a strong plot since I thought this was merely a ploy to bring one of the best villains to the future setting. But the way they did it is nothing short of brilliant and very surprising. And that wasn't even the best part. The best is about Batman's sidekicks and his relation to them. What I liked is the fact that the sidekicks (Batgirl and Robin/Tim Drake) and Batman are mistaken about Terry. While it wasn't entirely convincing Terry does show why there is a difference between him and them. One of the best Batman movies out there.
