Review The Instigators (2024): Not bad but not good either!

genre: crime, comedy, heist

Even if you are the biggest fan of Matt Damon and his work. You will be wondering throughout why he was even involved with this. Both Casey Affleck and Damon are also attached as producers. So I guess they wanted to be on board?

Unfortunately, it feels like almost every actor is going through the motions. Matt Damon is not doing much to make things interesting. At least Affleck attempts to bring some comic relief. Despite this, I did find myself laughing at events. Most situations are ridiculous and over the top. That's when I realized that this was the whole idea. For example. Damon's character is seeing a psychiatrist. She seems unusually invested in her patient, without ever explaining why. Affleck's character guessed it at one point. But up until that moment, she is part of their shenanigans.

I wished the film had better pacing. It easily could have ended earlier. The finale drags beyond belief, and it's here where I skipped a lot of scenes only to find out I barely missed anything. I do the same with cop shows like Chicago P.D. Even if you miss half of the episode, as long as you see how things conclude, you won't miss a single detail. I even skipped through a whole episode once and was glad to find out that I could do this. Well, The Instigators in that regard is the same. Right from the start, you will know how it plays out. It's a shame. Good heist films are rare. It's been a while I have seen one where I was completely enthralled.

Overall, The Instigators is one of those films you can watch on rainy Sundays. It's not bad, but not good either.
