Quick reviews of We Summon the Darkness (2019), Countdown (2019), Judy & Punch (2019) and Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)

 We Summon the Darkness (2019)

I get it. It's all the rage. Throwback to Eighties films and TV Shows is something I normally wouldn't get tired off. If done right. Unfortunately this is not the case here.

Had real potential to be a good horror film. Instead you get a film that is so painfully bland and boring I kept hoping it would end with some twist that would put everything on it's head. But no, what you see is what you get. It's stupid. The pretty girls might make it worth your while if you somehow don't have access to porn. Otherwise just forget about it. Actually that is not fair. Maddie Hasson and Alexandra Daddario are absolutely hot and probably will make it worth your while if you don't expect anything else.

Seriously though, even then you will be disappointed. So do avoid this one!

Countdown (2019)

They actually made an app for this for real. Did I download this? What do you think? Of course not!

Even if Countdown is not super terrifying I will never ever tempt fate. Same reason why I wouldn't say Candyman 5 times in front of a mirror. Naturally it's not real. Do I truly believe I will die when the timer has run out? Still crazier things have happened and who is to say that there isn't some deranged lunatic out there stalking people using the app to make the deaths happen. Or perhaps you get so obsessed by your supposedly upcoming doom you make it happen yourself. Why take the chance? Why?

None of the people in this film are as cautious. Without hesitation they download the app and guess what happens? Countdown is very reminiscent of Final Destination. But instead of the gore you actually get some buildup of tension and suspense done the right way.

Definitely one I can recommend!

Judy and Punch (2019)

The trailer had me intrigued. I was expecting this to be a cat and mouse play between husband and wife full of thrills, twists and turns.

Unfortunately like with most trailers it's a bit misleading. Don't get me wrong. At it's core the story is pretty interesting and heart wrenching. But by the way the film is executed you will have a hard time getting engrossed as much as they want you to. The biggest problem with this film is that it could have make good use of the puppets and be theatrical and exaggerate events. Except at one point it kind of let's go of the theater aspect and focus on the people.

There was a lot of promise but the film never delivered on that. I found it to be quite disappointing to be honest.

Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)

Not going to lie. Velvet Buzzsaw definitely is weird. And did have a real potential to actually be thrilling and compelling.

However other than being strange it never manages to be something more. Had this film successfully parodied the art world and the people in it then perhaps. However there are a bunch of problems with this. I am not a connoisseur neither do I have any idea how the art world is in L.A. I am aware that life in L.A. is strange. How do I know this? Because Steve Martin showed us in L. A. Story. And yes it's very obvious that this film is supposed to be a satire. Except it never ever makes you laugh. I myself was hoping this to embrace the horror elements and it actually focus on the murder paintings. Why not go into the background of the deeply troubled painter and that way maybe point out the flaws on the art world and how starting artists are struggling to make a living or something like that. That at least would have accomplished more.

As it is, it's just style over substance and not even entertaining. Quite soon into this film you will be bored. Since you are mostly waiting for the punchline that never comes.
