On a whim, I decided to watch Argylle, knowing in advance that people disliked it. Then after 90 minutes I was wondering what I was missing since I was having a blast so far. Then a reveal happened.
Mind you, the reveal itself wasn't bad, The consequences however were. And I must state that I am very aware that Matthew Vaughn has been parodying James Bond with the Kingsman franchise, but even those films knew some serious dramatic moments. Here it's almost a full on comedy where certain events are beyond ridiculous. They are mostly so because, Bryce Dallas Howard, is unbelievable as the person she is supposed to portray. Let me clarify, As someone who is a huge fan of the girls with guns genre, I like it when women are tough and capable. Especially when they have put in the hard work to make it convincing. The obvious use of CGI completely derailed the film for me. Yes, the cat Alfie wasn't always real, but for the most part looked real. It wasn't bothersome. However, in the case of Bryce, it was just appalling. Why even cast her if she can't even shoot a gun without a stunt double.
Then there was the excessive play on espionage tales with twist after twist. Yes, I get it. Sometimes, those twists can ruin a good story. But making fun of this by doing the exact same simply isn't funny. Especially, when it takes a while for the story to wrap up.
Overall, the hate towards this film is warranted. Matthew Vaughn screwed up big time.
