Review Iron Man (2008): The one that started the MCU!

genre: super hero, comic book adaptation, action, adventure, science fiction

There have been quite a few Marvel films with mixed results before MCU was initiated but I for one am glad that they made this decision. The MCU films do make the films act like live action versions of the Marvel comics and that is something I can't get enough of. Iron Man was the one to kick it off and did it splendidly.

Prior to this film I wasn't a huge fan of Iron Man. I was familiar to him because he randomly would pop in the comics I was reading like Fantastic Four and Spiderman. But I was curious what they would do with the character. It''s not like he truly has super powers. He basically is a man in a powered suit. That doesn't automatically make you something special. However Marvel managed to make him stand out. Robert Downey Jr. seems to be born for the role. He is exactly what I imagined Tony Stark would be like. It is compelling and fun to see him become Iron Man. Stark is the rich billionaire who does seem to be committed to his work but has not really given thought of what he is leaving behind. He doesn't take life and his legacy that seriously until he is confronted with some truth. It it is at this point that he takes action. The way director Jon Favreau has gone about it puts you right in the middle of it. He doesn't waste time to show us why Tony Stark needs to grow up. Shaun Toub as Yinsen helps him do that and provides one of the most emotional scenes in the film.

Now Stark is on a quest to do better. For which he builds the iron suit that will enable him to help mankind instead of destroying it. Naturally not everyone is happy with the sudden change and oppose it. Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane especially doesn''t want to see the company he help built be ruined. Bridges is an excellent villain as he is fleshed out enough to show where he is coming from. I read that Jeff Bridges wasn't too thrilled about his Marvel adventure since the script kept changing. He likes to be prepared before a shoot. Despite this you will hardly notice since it looks like he feels right at home. I can't say that I was super impressed by Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts but the dynamics between her and Robert Downey Jr. and her were great. Clark Gregg makes his first appearance as Agent Coulson and while he is doing well in Agents of Shield it reminds me how integral he was to the MCU and why I think he should be part of it again.

The action in Iron Man is top notch. Even today it holds up pretty good. It's exciting, spectacular and fun. Most of the action is combined with a good mixture of drama and comedy so that you feel involved but still can laugh about it. I especially am impressed how good the iron suit looks since if you aren't aware it's mostly CGI.

Overall Iron Man is is a very good start in the franchise and incises to more Marvel goodness.
