Review Apple TV Shows: Foundation, Slow Horses, Black Bird, The Last Frontier, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Presumed Innocent

Here are our thoughts / reviews of several Apple TV shows we watched.

Foundation is the first Apple TV show we watched. We did a review on the first season. Still have to finish the second and third season. Briefly, we liked it a lot. And we realize, it's rather large in scale and lore so that we do need to have watched more seasons to give a fair review. We'll do our best to complete this as fast as possible.

Slow Horses reminds me of Spooks when it comes to the intrigue part. But everything else is shoddy, gritty and far more nasty.

Gary Oldman plays Jackson Lamb who acts like he doesn't give a damn and is as foul as he can be, which is immense fun. He is the head of Slough House, the quarters of spy rejects. Basically, you are considered a major screwup if you end up here. Although, the team of misfits proves they are just as, or even more so, capable than their peers.

Season 1 was a blast from start to finish. I had hoped season 2 would be the same, but the first episodes seemed a bit slow. Since then, it's established there will be 7 seasons. So we obviously need to start watching it again.

Edit 31-12-2025:

We now have watched the second season 2 fully. After the first two episodes, events do seem to pick up. But I have to be honest here, compared to the first season, it feels like it has taken a dive quality wise. Still, it's the characters, especially Lamb that make it worth it. So for now I will stick with it.

The second show we watched is Black Bird. I am not sure if many people know of its existence. As crime dramas go, this easily is top tier.

The Last Frontier is predominantly great. Then the three last episodes let down considerably. Especially the eight episode, since that is basically a filler episode, that adds nothing whatsoever. The finale of the first season is a complete failure. It feels like an ending you would give to a show that has been on for several years. Not to mention the super predictable cliffhanger.

So in my opinion, watch the first seven episodes, then ignore the rest.

Not going to lie. I was immensely happy when they had announced a TV Show was in the making that would take place in the Monsterverse. I personally can't get enough of kaiju. So more is better right? Then I found out that this show was going to be more a human-centric conspiracy thriller without monsters. No monsters? Come on...

Naturally, This made me very skeptical. Still, I was curious how this show could enrich the franchise. Then I watched it and was glad I watched it since in a way it does add some new insights but it comes with a caveat. The Randa family and it's members. It will take a while to get used to them. But the first few episodes, their shennigans will annoy the hell out of you. They will grown on you though, and you will even start to care for them.

And yes, the show does get better each episode. Your patience will get rewarded!

Apparently, this is based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Scott Turow. The book was previously adapted into the 1990 film, starring Harrison Ford and Brian Dennehy. They changed the ending and other plot elements, so you won't be spoiled in case you have seen the film.

Turns out, that is the best decision they made, since it does offer a good surprise. The show, gives you several red herrings (as it should), and it's real fun to speculate who the culprit is. The entire cast is on their A game, acting wise, and they do give that extra something, to make it worth it.

I read that a second season is coming, encompassing a different case with a different cast. I definitely, will check it out!
