Review My Penguin Friend (2024): The Penguin is cute but.....

genre: drama, adventure, family

The weirdest thing about this film is the fact that this tale is based on a true story. In essence, the film is about a fisherman who befriends a penguin, with a mind of his own. He comes and goes as he pleases.

Now, the film tries to explain this due to a tragedy that has occurred to the main character, João, played by Jean Reno. It's a nice touch, but I wished they would have gone deeper with this. It's as if they didn't want to do that to keep things light. And there is nothing wrong with that if the film had more to offer. But other than some nice and sweet moments in the film, it's rather uneventful. Jean Reno is in automatic mode. He does what is asked, but doesn't really put in the effort to bring his A game. The rest of the cast are played by a Latino cast who barely can speak English. I don't like it when they do this. It feels so artificial. I have no problems with people speaking their original tongue. At this point, you should be comfortable reading subtitles. They also don't add that much to the story.

I don't think this is a complete waste of time. Still, it's hardly something I can recommend.
