Review Once Upon a Time in the West a.k.a. C'era una volta il West (1968) / 4K Blu-ray

genre: western, action, drama

Sergio Leone has not made that many films. But the ones he has made are all considered classics. Once Upon a Time in the West certainly is one of the best films ever made in cinema history.

This film might be low on action and violence. But dramatic wise, this certainly will resonate with a majority of people. In essence, this film is a revenge film. Although, you need to have a little patience for that to take place. In this case it makes sense since it points out that certain deceased characters have outsmarted the villains long before they got wind of it. I won't spoil but you will feel it when it happens.

Harmonica played by Charles Bronson is the lead. He is basically the hero of the film. But in many ways is quite the tragic figure. He can't let go of the past, since he is a man on a mission. But what happens to a man like that when he has accomplished his mission? This film gives an answer to that. Sure, the film's answer is quite poetic. Yet, i don't agree with it. I would stay with Jill McBain, played by Claudia Cardinale. She is almost the perfect woman. And she is one of the few who can pick whoever she wants.

Cheyenne, played by Jason Robards certainly wanted her. But he has a very good reason why he can't.  Frank, played by Henry Fonda, is one of those characters who has different needs. Still, he does appreciate and respect Jill in some way. Cheyenne and Harmonica are true friends. Even betrayal doesn't get between them.

It's hard to convey how much I love this film. But I do, I love this film. It emotes with me in ways I myself can't explain why. And this 4K Blu-ray version certainly helped to get me there. Visually, this film is gorgeous. Dramatic wise, it beats properly all the way. The music is stellar. The Sergio Leone / Ennio Morricone combo is magical. So yes, certainly a title I can recommend.
