genre: action, crime, drama
Even back in the day, I considered this mid-tier Van Damme. But after having watched it again today, I might even classify this as low tier Van Damme.
I am not entirely sure if prison films were popular, but I do remember that some action flicks were set in a prison in an attempt to increase the tension and thrills. Death Warrant certainly tries this and ups the ante with a villain called The Sandman, played by Patrick Kilpatrick. In my opinion, a totally ridiculous character. The main plot, didn't need him, but he does make things more interesting as he apparently can't die easily. I would have preferred had they opted to either focus on him alone or just the undercover mission. Now it seems like they realized that this plot was lacking and added a twist in the form of The Sandman. It doesn't really blend well if you ask me. He seems more like a supernatural being who belongs in a horror film. Not exactly a genre fitting for Jean-Claude.
The prison itself is also ridiculous. A surreal world where almost anything can happen. It does add some tension, since Van Damme's character is clearly out of his depth. And to make matters worse, he has to play detective in a world where everybody is paranoid and hostile. Anybody with common sense could figure out he was a cop. He doesn't waste asking questions. Even before he is settled in many prisoners want to devour him, so why would the same people be so open and answer questions about shady dealing within the prison?
The biggest problem of this film that despite the weird elements it wants you to take everything seriously. Actors like Robert Guillaume definitely cements this idea. But like I said, the plot itself was lacking. It was so obvious what was going on. Then what is left? The action. Let's face it, you are watching a Van Damme film for the action. But apart from a few fights there isn't that much action, and it certainly isn't memorable.
Overall, not one I can recommend, especially if you want good action.
