He is the director and action director, and decided to keep the story as basic as possible and focus on the action. The end result is an almost non-stop action extravaganza with top-notch martial arts by all people involved. Sammo is important, but is not the hero of the story. It's Cashier Ho, played by Wang Ho who is the lead and the one to dishes out the most pain. Experts say this is one of the most realistic demo's of Wing Chun. Who am I to disagree with that. It's obvious that the Wing Chun in this film is superior to every other style that is displayed.
Most of the choreography is stellar. But not all is memorable. In older Kung Fu films, the style and heritage of that particular Kung Fu is more important than the action and the violence. They understood that they had to change this to get people invested in later films. Perhaps that is why there is a huge disconnect between modern martial arts films and films like this one. Very wisely, the story is incredibly light, even for a Hong Kong film. There is just enough plot to get events going.
Overall, the film moves along in a fast pace and rarely is boring. A good early Sammo Hung film!
