My thoughts on You People (2023): No wonder the world is in trouble right now!

genre: romance, comedy

Creator / writer / director Kenya Barris (Black-ish) fails to deliver the sharp satire that was promised. How do they even dare to call this film a comedic spin on Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? It's a downright insult.

I honestly don't understand why Eddie Murphy chose to be involved with this project. First, he was barely in this film. And in the time he was present, he wasn't even funny. As a matter of fact, no one truly was. Except for Mike Epps. He was the only one who appealed to my funny bone. I read in an article that Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill discussed how Hill was dating someone from another culture and where the couple had very to little problems except the people around them. And to be fair, that does sound like a great idea. It would have worked had they bothered to portray real people. On the one side, you have extreme fanatical Eddie Muprhy and wife who for the most part don't even try to be human. They are just rude and obnoxious. On the other side, you have Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny trying too hard and expose themselves as the most ignorant of them all. I remember seeing this clip from Black-ish, Little Girl in Elevator, where the lead and other black characters run away from this little white girl in the elevator. In this clip, you got to witness the perspectives from all kinds of angles. It was sharp, clever and very funny. I was expecting more of the same.

All the people in this film could and should have been able to make events and predicaments believable. Except, there is hardly a conflict. All of it feels forced and fake. Even the romantic parts don't make much sense. There is very little chemistry between Jonah Hill and Lauren London. If they were so in love, why would they even allow their parents to mess up their relationship? I realize most people would want their parents to give their approval. In this day and age, though, it's hardly a thing. And if not, I am sorry to say, you are a fool. No parent should stand in your way of happiness. Even if they believe that the person you want to be with is wrong for you. And let's be real. Parents usually only want you to be with people they like. Those people often make bad partners.

Avoid this one like the plague and opt to watch Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
