Review Nobody (2021): Odenkirk does John Wick!

genre: action, crime, thriller, gun fu

Ever since Nobody was announced I couldn't wait to see it. And now it's finally here and as Christopher Lloyd's character states: It was glorious!

Comedian Bob Odenkirk has proven himself to be a very versatile actor. If Breaking Bad wasn't proof of this then Better Call Sail certainly has emphasized the acting power he possesses. So why wouldn't he do an action flick? It's very clear to me that he put some work into this project. Apparently he has been training with the John Wick team to convince us that Odenkirk's character can kick ass. Mission accomplished. Not only does he look fit. He actually looks like someone you really shouldn't mess with. This might not seem this way at first since like most old school action films he has to be shown hesitant to come into action. Very likely he doesn't want to let the beast out. Besides if he does his actions will undoubtedly attract some unwanted attention. However that would be very boring for the viewer so it doesn't take long for Hutch (played by Odenkirk) to break some bones. His own but most importantly the bones of the bad guys. Naturally the bad guys are stererotypically bad. The first henchmen who get to feel the wrath of Odenkirk are Daniel Bernhardt and Alain Moussi in the first big action sequence. Unlike John Wick Hutch is a little more vulnerable and gets hurt a lot more than Wick did. I guess they went for the more realistic approach and actually show what happens when people brawl with each other especially when knives get involved.

While for the most part Nobody is a serious film there is a lot of humour to be found in the film. There are some real funny scenes in this. I can't remember laughing so hard. Yes, the jokes were that good. That being said, Nobody doesn't do anything new but still manages to surprise you with by having unlikely characters be coldblooded killers as well. Perhaps a bit far fetched. But it's one of the elements in action flicks like these that enhance the viewing experience considerably. You should never ever get mad about that. Why? Because they are fun. Director Ilya Naishuller most famous for the very underrated Hardcore Henry clearly knows his stuff. And another thing he does well is to tell all he needs to tell within 92 minutes. Although I would not have minded for them to feature more action. Then again it might have been overkill like it was in John Wick 3. So no 92 minutes was more than enough!

Overall, it's a no-brainer for action fans. But surprisingly enough even non action fans like Mrs. P. loved this film. There is just enough there to make things appealing to the casual viewer as well. Definitely a must watch!
