Review Independence Day: Resurgence (2016): Easily one of the worst movies I have seen in my lifetime!

genre: science fiction, action, adventure

No one was really waiting for the sequel to the blockbuster film that was Independence Day but after twenty years it was not something I was objecting to. In fact I was looking forward to the action, spectacle and laughter it would provide. But this sequel is nothing like the original.

Of course this film was never going to be as big or thrilling as the first Independence Day because of not having the surprise factor anymore. But you could have remedied that by making the spectacle and action bigger, grander and more exciting. Unfortunately we are denied this. Every event in this film is predictable to a tee. We don't get an attachment to any of the characters even the returning ones played by Bill Pullman or Jeff Goldblum. Except maybe Brent Spiner as Dr. Brakish Okun. Although he tried a little too hard to be funny. If I remember correctly in the original they weren't scared to kill off people on screen. Actually all the death and destruction had an impact on the viewer. Now that is completely gone. There is hardly any buildup to the characters and the events. It doesn't help that the characters themselves are quite boring. Remember how we cheered when Will Smith's character punched an alien in the face? Or how we were relieved to see the dog made it? The original was filled with funny and dramatic scenes. Here all of the scenes felt lacking in some form or another. I lost interest in the film after only ten minutes of watching desperately hoping it would recover or redeem itself. It wasn't until the last 15 minutes that I found something worth while. That is a long wait ladies and gentlemen and I only kept watching because of the company I was in. Had I been watching this alone I might have stopped watching and start it up again until I was in a more forgiving mood.

Now I am not going to pretend that the original was a masterpiece. But say what you will about that one it was entertaining from start to finish.  Resurgence is an unbelievable mess throughout where every sense and logic has been thrown out. Director Roland Emmerich should be embarrassed and ashamed of what he has made and he certainly had no right saying that the Marvel films were silly. The worst of all the Marvel movies is ten times better than this crap. At one point I tried to embrace the badness and the cheesiness to at least get some fun out of this and I didn't really manage to.

Please don't watch this, it's going to be a giant waste of your time and money. I would as go so far to say that this is not worth watching at home on dvd or television either even if they paid you for doing so.
