The trailer made it seem like this was going to be a funny affair. I mean how can you go wrong with Eric Bana and Ricky Gervais together trying to fool the world.
As it turns out very much so if you don't put in the effort and passion required to make a witty satire. Ricky Gervais has written and directed this film and it surprises me how lacking it is in every element of film making you can imagine. It's like he was pressured to make this somehow and did not try at all. None of the comedy is sharp or bold like you can expect from Gervais. Although America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) and Raúl Castillo as couple Brigida and Domingo do provide some laughs and charm. They are so overwhelmingly sweet and nice that there is no escaping from it. Vera Farmiga plays a role untypical for her but seems to be enjoying her bitchy role. I guess her coldness and narcissism was a good contrast to unadventurous husband Ian Finch (Ricky Gervais). It was nice to see Eric Bana again but I do think his talents were wasted. Maybe if Rcky would take himself out of the equation he would have more to do. Now his role basically could have been played by anyone and it would not have made any difference. Since Gervais put emphasis on his character. Very dumb move if you ask me since Bana on his own would have brought to this satire what was needed. At least things would have been more interesting. Gervais and Bana together simply have no chemistry.
I don't know what else to say. I really don't think you should waste your time with this since it does not offer the good satire we are promised. It never tries to bring something fresh to the table. But overall it is not funny enough.
