Review Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

genre: action, adventure, science fiction

As a fan of the original franchise and having seen all of the movies and TV Show I wasn't too thrilled with the Tim Burton remake. Technically sound but everything else was disappointing. One of the reasons why I wasn't really in a hurry to check the latest reboot. Another reason was that the premise of the story already was familiar to me since it featured in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. With a sequel coming to Rise this year I felt compelled to give this a shot. And wow, right from the start I was hooked and remained so until it was finished. While the transformation from domesticated chimpanzee to rebellious ape was a bit fast and rushed it was believable enough to root for him and the other apes. How can you not cheer for a creature using man's invention against them? Human beings want to meddle into things they should not meddle with and the consequences of those actions could be worse than the benefits. Of course this is a movie and very unlikely something like this could happen for real. But that does not stop humans from doing genetic engineering without actually knowing what the long terms affects will be. Rise of the Planet of the Apes just is trying to warn us and realize that there are dangers to something like genetic engineering and that nature has a way of fighting back. Now they could have paid a little more attention to the ethics but understandably the focus was on the poorly treated apes rebelling. You really cared for them especially Caesar. You want him to succeed no matter what. I truly regret not having given this a chance earlier. Better late than never I always say. So if like me you were skeptical and are looking for a thrilling, action packed and very powerful movie then look no further. Don't make the mistake like I did to compare it to the Tim Burton one. They aren't connected. Rise of the Planet of the Apes makes me look forward to it's sequel. I would gladly like to see Caesar taking over the world.
