One of the rare titles I have only seen twice at most. So I decided it was time to watch it a third time. It's been a while and I very fortunately, I had forgotten the essential parts of the film. It was like I was watching this for the first time.
And it has to be said, it was a very pleasant and fun viewing experience. Even the big twist I had forgotten about and it was great. The Faculty has quite a few big names that make an appearance. Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Robert Patrick, Jon Stewart,Famke Janssen and more. They do elevate the spin on Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It's like The Breakfast Club meets The Thing. The Faculty is not a comedy by any means. It certainly shouldn't be taken very seriously, but for the most part events are played out in a very serious manner. Despite this, there is a lack of dread. Invasion films usually rely on that, and very wisely so, since that is the most terrifying part. Although there is a lot of suspense considering The Queen and whether the main characters can be trusted or not. As it turns out, that is all you need. Robert Rodriguez definitely understands staying to the point and move events along. There isn't a single second wasted. One scene, for example, is very reminiscent of a pivotal scene in The Thing. Contrary to that scene, the terror is not felt. I was compelled to find out who the impostor was, but it lacked the dread and intensity that The Thing has throughout. Perhaps it is unfair to compare. Then again, if you are going to copy elements from a classic, you better make sure you put in something original and creative. In that regard, The Faculty could have done better. Still, there is an energy to this flick one can't deny.
