When the film opens, you are introduced to a trigger warning. I have never seen something like this, not even in the most horrific of titles. And I must say that I was intrigued. I kind of got what was going to happen. Although I was very surprised that I still got deeply affected.
In large part, this is of course due to the plot and direction of Zoƫ Kravitz. It's quite a debut for a first time director to be honest. I was thoroughly invested from start to finish. Yes, at certain times, I was getting a little tired of the drinking, drug use and games, but these elements are essential to the mystery, so in hindsight, it makes sense. I do want to point out that a lot of people seem to be hating on the film since in their opinion it's woke and feminist propaganda. You could interpret it that way, but as someone who is tired of political messages and wokeism in films, I don't feel that Blink Twice is motivated in that way. There is some dialogue that exposes events to be personal and not part of a big master plan. I can't explain without spoiling, therefore I am deliberately vague. But there is one moment in particular that puts a spin on things. Mind you, the excuse given is not exactly logical and pretty far-fetched. Still, it's implied that trauma is a big determining factor.
At first, I thought the casting was questionable since especially the lead actress is not that attractive. Then I realized that was exactly the point. She was chosen for a specific reason. And once you are aware, events become so much more disturbing. Blink Twice should be seen as an entertaining thriller (even horror) and nothing more. This is very apparent since the film is not afraid to insert humour at times when you least expect it. It's Kravitz saying that you shouldn't take things too seriously.
Overall, I can truly recommend this film since it is very entertaining!
