Review Lady Terminator a.k.a. Pembalasan Ratu Pantai Selatan (1989): A Terminator clone that rocks!

genre: action, drama, fantasy

Lady Terminator as the title suggests borrows a lot from The Terminator but does add a unique flavour to it that makes it even more worth your while.

Honestly, after having watched the DVD, I can't believe it took me this long to watch this. I also, can't believe it's so hard to get a hold of this title. Because it's B movie gold, for sure! The DVD also has introduced me to the Mondo Macabro video label, the only one who sells the film. Their motto: Our mission is to hunt down strange, bizarre, and forgotten films and bring them back to life. We’ve been  doing this for a long time now and we don’t plan to stop any time soon. I, for one, am very grateful since these are the kinds of films that offer the most fun. On here there was also a little documentary explaining the boom of the Indonesian film industry, that I can truly recommend as it packs a real punch for the film fans.

The weird thing is that I probably already could have experienced a fun time if not for the opening scene. I was under the impression that it was the wrong film which had me put off from watching. It starts with a sex scene between a guy and the queen of the South Sea. She unleashes a serpent in her vagina to devour the man's penis. Maybe to increase her power, I am not really sure. But this man turns out to be some wizard and managed top stop her. Obviously, this made her a little mad and curses his great-granddaughter. Years later we are introduced to Tania, an anthropologist, played by Barbara Anne Constable, who happens to be doing research on the queen. At one point she takes over control of Tania and disaster strikes.

So it takes a bit for the Terminator part to start. But when it does, it's so sweet. In order to have a more international appeal, the leads are Western actors. Especially, Barbara Anne Constable is a revelation. She is drop-dead gorgeous. Easily outclasses Kristanna Loken in every way. Even acting wise. She looks real convincing as a robot who never blinks. Thing is, she is not actually a robot, so there is no need for her to act this way. Who cares? It's such a joy to watch this sexy but unstoppable lady kill people left and right to get to the descendant of that one man who put a stop to her evil ways. Talk about holding a grudge. Fortunately, Christopher J. Hart as Max McNeil is on the case to end the queen. When he realizes he is a little outmatched, he calls upon his army buddies, who go all in.

A film like Lady Terminator needs to be watched with a certain mind set. Yes, it's bad in places, actually like 90 precent of the film, but that is part of its charm. And up until this time, most of us thought that only Hong Kong and Japan were capable of giving us wacko films like these. Well, Indonesia, has shown us, that with the right people they could do the same or even better. Definitely one to watch if you are a film fan like me!
