This marked the return of the cast of the original series. If you are familiar with the show, then you know that everything about the show was low budget. Creative, remarkable story and premise wise, but visually even for then was quite outdated. This film is the first production for the original cast with a big budget and high production values. Granted, one could argue, compared to Star Wars for example, whether Star Trek: The Motion Picture still was a little behind the times.
However, there are some elements present where you can tell a lot of work and thought is put in. There is an aesthetic and ambiance to the film that does give this adventure some credibility. The focus on the mystery is strong and very typical compared to previous adventures experienced by the crew. Like in the original series, it's all about philosophical discussions and exploration. The way I like it.
But I can't deny, that the film takes too long to get to the point. It's understandable that the makers were proud of the production and wanted to display much of their work as possible. Only, it doesn't really help story and character wise. It's basically filler. I mean, they keep showing Enterprise from all possible angles and even the crew, who should be used to their own ship by now, keep getting amazed by the way it looks. Although it does point out the scale of, for example, of the starship Enterprise and all the other space stations.
