Review Midway (2019): Epic film that flew under the radar!

genre: action, drama, history

You know this really gets to me. There is so much praise and publicity about for example Uncut Gems but then an epic film like this barely gets mentioned. Why?

Perhaps someone could get the wrong idea about Roland Emmerich's last outing which was Independence Day: Resurgence. I mean that was a total disaster. However every director should be allowed one. But then look at the cast involved. Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Dennis Quaid, Aaron Eckhart and Patrick Wilson. That has to count for something right? And yes this cast matters since they do elevate the production ten fold. I am not always sure about Ed Skrein but for once he plays a character I have rooted for from start to beginning. How can you not. He basically is like a WWII version of Maverick from Top Gun. Now since the film depicts events of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the aftermath not a lot of time is dedicated to the characters. Meaning what you see is what you are going to get. You will have to judge them on their actions and how those actions are perceived. Sometimes that is all what is needed. However since most of these characters are based on real historic figures they probably could have been fleshed out a little more.

First and foremost it's the action that takes center stage. It's exciting and exhilarating. You wouldn't believe how much I was yelling at the scream for the pilots failing to hit their targets. Usually I have mixed feelings about these historic events since there are always two sides to a story. And I rather stay objective. Still you can't help but feel get invested into events since so many things are at stake. Especially since the Japanese fleet and fighter pilots were so damn efficient. I liked how they weren't portrayed as inhumane super evil people who only were out to kill and torture. No, they also were just following orders and don't actually want to go to war. This points out that time is taken to at least give the characters the right and accurate motivation for the events. Something like that has to be commended.

Midway is a must watch for sure and it definitely deserves more attention and praise than it has received so far.
