Review Killer Elite (2011): An action thriller full of adrenaline but where they forgot to add real twist and turns!

genre: action, crime, thriller

Killer Elite is based on a novel called The Feather Men written by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Supposedly this novel is based on true events but according to wikipedia needs to be taken with a grain of salt. It doesn't really matter since Killer Elite has taken out the elements that could have turned this into an intriguing thriller full of twists and turns.

Then what is left? A good action film where Jason Statham, Clive Owen and even Robert De Niro deliver. The action scenes pack enough punch and keeps the film compelling enough to make it worth your while. However if you were expecting more you will be disappointed. Killer Elite does manage to take make it seem like events take place in the Eighties. It certainly adds to the viewing experience. But apart from this there is nothing there. There are no real dialogues or conversations. Every conversation is there to move the plot along or to very briefly give you an idea of the relationship between the persons talking. The film is incredibly fast paced and it never allows you to think about what is occurring. One could argue that this fast pace combined with the hard hitting action is it's saving grace. However I couldn't help but feel there was something substantial missing. It would have been nice to see some fireworks in the acting department where for example Clive Owen and Jason Statham could have had real interesting and tense dialogues. Or some more bonding moments between Statham and Robert De Niro's character or the other friends like Davies played by Dominic Purcell.

But perhaps I am nitpicking a little. I was entertained throughout and this definitely could be considered one of the better Jason Statham films.
