How is the boss fight with Ornstein and Smough fair? To be honest it only took me four tries. I was so very close the first three times. But I think the intimidation of that humongous Smough got to me. He looks more dangerous than he is. Once I discovered he was all bark no talk (relatively speaking) I owned him big time. That and the fact that upgrading your pyromancy flame really makes the difference. Don't get swayed by the so called resistance of Schmough to fire. He gets hurt by it just fine.
So do invest some time and souls into pyromancy. It really is worth it. Also the pillars are your friend. Stand behind them and Smough can't hit you. Another good item to use is the green herb.
