Review Son of Batman (2014)

genre: action, adventure, animation, comic book

Not being that well versed with all of the DC comics I do know a few things when it comes to Batman. And I hate to say it but Son of Batman is almost making a mockery out of some of the mythology concerning his son. I know that Damian Wayne was very violent, aggressive and had no qualms in killing people. In this animated film all events while full of slick action are incredibly cartoonish and doesn't really mesh with the dramatic context at all. In fact all the drama has been skipped on to focus on the action. And I don't get it. All of the previous animated features were full of action yet provided darkness and depth which made everything more interesting. Here every essential detail to know about Damian for example has been excluded. It is clear that he is a badass. But would it have hurt to go deeper into the story. And how having a son he did not know about affects Batman for example. He is almost a side character in this one. Only very briefly is remarked what Night Wing (a.k.a. Dick Grayson a.k.a. original Robin) thinks of this and should have been exploited on. On the other hand, how would they cram it all in the running time of 74 minutes? Maybe a montage or here is an idea, less action but more build up to it when it matters with a little more tension. Don't get me wrong, this isn't all that bad, but it is a bit disappointing especially compared to the previous animated features.
