Some reviewers seem to dislike or even hate this title. And had it been purely about the gameplay, then perhaps they had a point. But for the most part, they go into the narrative and the characters who don't seem to match their idea of the characters that should be in a Bond game.
I must admit that after playing the first two missions, I wasn't convinced and even a little worried if I had made a mistake purchasing this game. But then the third mission happened, and I understood what it was going for. IO Interactive tried to give you a more hands-on approach to missions like they offered you in the Hitman games, but at the same time, not forget about the big Bond moments the films and previous games had. While not perfect, I liked this option. Granted, I expected your way of playing to have more impact on the story and outcome, still, when the first Bondesque moments happened, I forgot about my initial doubts and was smiling like a little toddler receiving his most desired toy.
Despite what some people say, the story is good. It's not like the Bond films have sophisticated and strong stories. They usually are very simple but effective. This game is no different. So yes, this game is about Bond becoming 007. 007 still has to learn the ropes of the trade and has to listen to his superiors. I wonder if the people who complain about the story have even seen the films. This is a common theme. Bond usually always listens. Only in the more personal does he go against them because they don't allow him to carry out his personal vendetta. I had zero problems with M, Moneypenny, Q, and other characters. They are more like the ones in the Daniel Craig films than the older ones. If you can't get over that, then you never will. I liked the banter between Bond and Greenway. Pupil and mentor. The mentor is extremely hard on him for some reason, and you dislike him at first, but then you learn to appreciate him. Of course, it helps that he looks and is voiced by Lennie James. But throughout the game, there are moments between Bond and others where he demonstrates his charm.
007 First Light is far from perfect. It is flawed. But the core gameplay is fun. At this point, it's hard to innovate, and I am not really expecting that as long as you can provide the fun, and it does. So do give this game a shot, especially if you are a fan of James Bond. It's one of the best games in the franchise!
