Review RocknRolla (2008): Saved by the performances!

genre: action, crime, comedy

It was my intention to write a review immediately after I watched this film again. But honestly, I was so put off, that I couldn't. In that regard, I did feel the same as the first time I watched it.

You know how, sometimes, certain films can grow on you. Unfortunately, RocknRolla is not one of those. Now, this doesn't mean I think it's terrible. There are some enjoyable moments that entertained me. However, I had to skip several times to get to the good parts. For whatever reason, the film is filled with convoluted, nonsensical bits that suck out your soul. Most of these bits concern Johnny Quid. Skipping these BTW doesn't destroy comprehending this film, since it's essentially your typical Guy Ritchie plot where several characters have their role to play in the big picture but unlike Lock Stock and Snatch lacks a satisfying ending.

Thank god, for the brilliant performances by Gerard Butler, Idris Elba, Mark Strong, Tom Wilkinson and many others. They do elevate the viewing experience enormously. Probably the main reason why most people are very forgiving towards this film.

Overall, not one I can recommend. Some parts of the plot reminded me of the far superior Layer Cake. Better watch that one instead!
