Review The Priests a.k.a. Geomeun sajedeul (2015): Genuinely thrilling!

genre: horror, mystery, thriller, exorcism

In my never-ending search for good horror films, I sometimes come across generic titles that don't actually entice me to watch them. Only when this title keeps popping up, I am willing to give it a go. The Priests is one of them. And I can tell you, it was one of the best decisions I made.

We live in a time when it is hard to be truly fresh and creative. Especially, in the horror genre, there is a high probability of doing the same thing over and over again. For some this is a big no no. For me, this is not that much of a deal as long as the film delivers on the dread, suspense or something else that makes my viewing experience exciting. The Priests certainly is not reinventing the wheel, but it certainly gave an alternative perspective on the rituals and at the same time criticizing the stance of big religious organizations like, The Catholic Church. In this film especially, the priests who should be considered heroes are being mocked and ridiculed. Why? Because the people in charge, people who are supposed to be believers, don't really believe.

Father Kim, doesn't let that get in his way, still, people aren't really jumping with joy to joins his quest, so they go to the people who are deemed a little problematic themselves. In this case, Deacon Choi. It takes a bit for him to trust Father Kim and when he finally does, the battle is fierce. I really liked how they did present Father Kim to be rude and pessimistic. I guess, it is to test his pupil. To see if he has what it takes. Considering what they are up against, that is not such a weird thing to do. And trust me, these priests are really put to the test.

The horror elements are excellent, as they make sure you care for most of the characters. You don't want bad things to happen to them. The Priests does a good job of building up tension and suspense but isn't afraid to crack a few jokes to break that tension. After having watched this film three times now, I constantly slap myself for not watching this sooner. This is definitely one of the best exorcism films in existence, so do check it out!
