Review Nosferatu (2024): A very underwhelming viewing experience!

genre: horror, fantasy, mystery

To be honest, I wasn't aware that Nosferatu was a spin on Bram Stoker's Dracula. It makes sense within the film, since you do see parallels with Coppola's masterpiece.  But the spin isn't remarkable enough, and every other element that could have made it worth your while is not present.

Let me tell you, I was very much invested in this film, since I had high hopes for the writer / director to make a film similar to The Witch. That was a proper horror with immense buildup of tension and dread. And most importantly, a pay-off. Unfortunately, he went all Northman on us where pretension took over.  Mind you, I can appreciate some of the psychological elements, had there been enough shown on to make that substantial. Only, that is not the case. What we are left with is, decent visuals and some creepy scenes. But, there is not a scary moment present. Correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't a horror film instil some dread and terror into you? It's one of the main reasons I love horror films.

Before Nosferatu was filmed, I read an article where some extra or actor on the set was terrified by the presence of Orlok, played by Bill Skarsgård. I really fail to see how this was the case. His deep voice and moustache made him look like a porn actor. Couldn't they have dropped it and made him look more like he was portrayed in the original? And while it is obvious that Bill Skarsgård is a good actor. He certainly doesn't have the chops that come close to Gary Oldman. He was both charming and terrifying as Dracula. At least, in his case I understand, why he made people love him, apart from the spell he puts them under.

I was expecting so much more, but for me this whole viewing experience was underwhelming!
