Guessing from some of the bad reviews, I gather that those viewers didn't get past the opening scene. I remember watching the same scene and thinking how bad it looked. It was too over the top quite soon without any buildup and a conclusion that made you scratch your head. Then I got to read some other reviews who were blown away by the film. So I decided to watch it no matter what.
The opening scene might give the wrong impression, it does set up something that is of importance throughout the film. And to be honest, it's almost genius how the film steers into a quite disturbing direction. Obviously, I won't spoil it. But the thing is that Metamorphosis relies on a slow burn in the same vein as The Wailing. It also delivers in the same way. Instead of giving you jump scare after jump scare, the film builds up an ever-increasing sense of dread and tense atmosphere. I was so invested and wanting to know what was going on.
