Review The Terror Season 1 (2018)

genre: horror, mystery, drama

The Terror is a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to the Arctic from 1845 to 1848. I don't know how much of this is true. But I think it gives a good idea of what it was like. Although, it did make me wonder why anyone would partake in such an adventure, since it obviously was incredibly foolish.

I went in blind and got sucked in the story pretty quickly. It's not said with many words, but most of the crew aren't really on board with the journey they are part of, especially since the chance of not making it was very probable. Getting stuck in the Antarctic, far from the living, is not a place I would want to be at. Especially since this world seems to be quite hostile to humans. I won't go into the details since discovery is half the fun. But let's say that apart from the practical challenges, it's hard to keep morale high. It helps that the entire cast do a good job of making everything seem real. The production values in large part also are excellent, except maybe in one case. But thinking about it, that might have been done deliberately.

What I really like about this show is that at one point it's clear what the real terror is. But more importantly, how little can be done against it, since it's very easy to get to it. I am being vague for a reason, since I don't want to spoil it for you. The show might be a little slow for some, it is pretty effective in creating tension and chills. Maybe not full on dread. Still, they do make it seem like anything could happen.

Therefore, I can really recommend this show. Atmosphere wise it can be compared to Chapelwaite. Although, The Terror is easily superior.
