Even without having seen this film, I have heard about this title. In whatever search, this one keeps popping up. I think this has to do with the fact that the pole fighting is of another level. All the people involved make it seem so easy. And sure everybody can pick up a pole or staff, swing or strike and be successful. But to be efficient and deadly? That requires skill and mastery. Of course, that can be said of all martial arts. Yet, I think even non-martial arts enthusiasts can testify that the combat in this film is exquisite.
The story though is a little messy. While the premise is pretty simple, the important details are thrown at you in a lightning speed, making it hard to grasp what is really going on. Add to that the high melodrama, and it might be a little hard to stomach some scenes. Especially, the ones where one of the seven brothers in the film is acting crazy. Apparently, he is suffering from PTSD of the highest order and therefore is highly unpredictable. The other brother, basically the lead, played by Gordon Liu has a more reserved reaction to the death and betrayal he has experienced. He also is severely traumatized, but is trying to work it out to improve himself. Granted, he also is a little irrational at times, but considering what he went through, it makes sense. That being said, with most martial arts flicks, the story isn't that important. It should serve as motivation for the main characters to fight and to intensify the combat. In that regard, the story is stellar. Gordon's character is so motivated, he is able to become a master within a short time. While he lacks the belief and conviction to become a Buddhist monk, his mastery and skills convince the monastery leaders to accept him as one of them.
I like how the Buddhist monks forsake their principles of none violence and peace when patriotism is involved. I mean, I probably would do the same, but here in this film they were giving Gordon such a hard time about being too violent and wild then basically tell him to be even more violent. It's one of those elements that make the viewing experience so much better. And let me tell you, this film doesn't skimp out on the blood. The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter is pretty brutal and unforgiving. Even the women are though as nails. Let's be real here, nothing sexier than beautiful, hot women kicking ass.
Overall, this film is a real blast and definitely one I can recommend!
