Review 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003): Flawed but at least sticks to racing like it's supposed to!

genre: action, crime, thriller

For a long time this sequel to The Fast and The Furious was regarded as bad, if not the worst. While it certainly has it's flaws I don't really understand this. Let me explain to you why this part is much better than you think.

First of all, Paul Walker is back as Brian. He is no longer an undercover cop. However is still called back into action after he gets caught when racing for money. I really have to admit that after all these years it was good to see him again. Especially in the way he was bromancing with Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pearce. After being reminded of his role in this film I kinda understand why he was so mad playing second fiddle to everyone else. He is an equal to Brian in every way. Sure he is a joker but he is not someone to mess with. Along the way they have forgotten this and made him the comic relief. Gibson and Walker have real great chemistry and it was fun to see them bicker and argue and then fist bumping and cheering together. 2 Fast 2 Furious might repeat the same plot as the original but approaches it a little differently. Now both Brian and Roman are in it together and since they aren't the biggest of friends things won't go as smoothly as one expects. Essentially this is a buddy movie. And I for one am a sucker for those.

Also compared to the craziness in recent parts you can't deny that the action in this film is more grounded in realism. Plus it sticks to racing. The way it's shot and choreographed I certainly got my adrenaline fix. Call me nostalgic but it was also good to see the neon lights, customized cars and babes return. While I am sure I am going to get burned for this, I really don't care if you think I am a Neanderthal. I know how to be behave and be a gentleman. That still doesn't negate the fact that one shouldn't be able some sexiness. The film is set in Miami for god sake. How can you not show beautiful women in bikini's? I enjoyed the butts being slapped. Of course many would say it's sexist and perhaps it is. However if these women are fine with it who are we to argue and complain about it. May I remind you that in one case it was the villain's way to depict he owned her. He is supposed to be vile and evil. Besides some women like it. Between consenting adults it's totally fine. Also when you have strong women like Suki who is very much her own woman who are we to say she should act and dress a certain way. Speaking of the villain. Cole Hauser is more somebody who plays cops well. I don't think he was right to play the villain. It's not that he was bad or anything. However he wasn't really menacing even if he tried real hard to convince us he was.

I am not going to defend the plot. It's obviously weak. In hindsight most of the films in this franchise have questionable plots and therefore should not be that big of a deal. The action however should come on top which it does over and over again. It's the exciting kind with enough surprises to keep the fun factor high.

Overall 2 Fast 2 Furious is certain fun but first and foremost it's real fun. And that is what counts.
