Review Tiger Cage 3 a.k.a. Leng mian ju ji shou (1991): Phantom Opera meets Body Heat? And your typical cops and robbers action flick? I am confused!

genre: action, martial arts, bullet ballet, crime

Oh yes, even the great Yuen Woo-Ping has been guilty off venturing into bizarro world where everything looks like it's the real word but where nothing makes sense.

Even if I wanted to explain the plot to you I don't think I would be able to since almost everything in this plot is insane and crazy. Probably because this film basically is three or four movies rolled into one. One is about a obsessed and disfigured cop who wants to get back with his girlfriend. But somehow is unable to. Even when she is very willing. Then there is the tale of a cold blooded business woman who will do whatever she needs to do in order to get on top. Next to this there is the story of Michael Wong who is out for revenge on this cold blooded woman since because of her he lost all of his money. Oh yeah, he also is a cop but barely acts like one. Last but not least there is an action film hidden within these stories that feel out of place. The film is all over the place tonally. One minutes it's super serious and melodramatic. Another it's like one big spoof. Did I mention that misogyny and rape are accepted acts in this world?

It's safe to say that the plot should be ignored. Instead focus on the beautiful Sharla Cheung Man and the action. At least then you will be able to get something positive out of this film. Sharla is a true femme fatale capable of  more than she has been given to work with. A real shame since that could have made this film compelling for the right reasons. Cheung Kwok-Leung is the one who kicks ass action wise. He has some really impressive moves but sadly has been forced to play a naive, tragic moron which in hindsight makes his story quite comical. Now I think about it. Most of the action don't even really tie in with the events that have preceded. Normally that dulls the viewing experience. Here it's a welcome distraction.

Overall the worst and the weirdest in the Tiger Cage film series. Definitely worth a watch for it's total insanity and lack of coherency.
