Review Bad Boys for Life (2020): Best part in the franchise!

genre: action, comedy, crime

In general I could be considered a fan of the franchise. I love action films especially good ones. And say what you want about Michael Bay he knows how to make good action films. Unfortunately he also has the tendency to take it too far and make his films too big even when there is no need for it. Perhaps Jerry Bruckheimer thought the same and hired two Belgian filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to jumpstart the franchise again.

And I have to say I am pleasantly surprised in how good Bad Boys for Life actually is. I was fearing a rehash of earlier films without bringing anything new into the mix. Naturally you can't avoid Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett of reminiscing or referring to past adventures. But it's part what makes it fun especially if you are familiar with the franchise and it's characters. Of course Bad Boys for the most part consists of slick action and comedic antics. However on top of that it introduces drama. Sure it's not the sophisticated and complex kind still it's incredibly effective. Maybe a little far fetched and unbelievable in parts but thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining.

The action is choreographed well and is quite exciting. Spectacular when it's needed and kept small and personal to keep events intense and hard hitting. Like in the previous films it's Martin Lawrence who provides the most laughs. If you ever had doubts he is a comedic genius then this film will convince you otherwise. His timing is impeccable. He made me laugh at times I wasn't really expecting to be laughing. Plus it was always a welcome distraction. Then there is the addition of Vanessa Hudgens and Paola Nuñez. I didn't even realize it was Hudgens until after I had seen the film. Her character has a look and attitude that made her extremely cool and likable. Nuñez was a revelation to me. Not only is she extremely hot she also has the acting chops to back up the toughness of her character. Marcus is so right to berate Mike for letting her go. I mean who in their right mind would do so?

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have brought the freshness that was needed to ignite this franchise. But most importantly they managed to make the best Bad Boys film yet. I can't wait to see what they will bring next. A must-watch for sure!
