My thoughts on Toy Story 4 (2019) and The Secret Life of Pets 2

genre: animation, comedy, adventure, drama, feel good

Toy Story 4 (2019)

When Toy Story 4 was announced I was pretty skeptical. I thought the third part had concluded the franchise quite nicely. What more could they tell and explore? Hadn't they covered everything? Seemed like a cash grab to me!

Toy Story 4 does indeed revisit certain elements. But you really have to be cold blooded and cynical not to get overwhelmed by the heart and passion put in this. Again you will emote on the topics depicted and discussed. More importantly Toy Story 4 builds on what previously was told. Apparently Toy Story 3 didn't conclude everything. Especially Woody's story. Woody was perfectly happy with the life he had up until this point. He is missing something. Or actually he found out that what he considered to be his purpose in life is not enough. And on top he has one big regret. But is conflicted about it. Since he would have to give up on something that defines him.

Toy Story 4 not only tugs the heart strings very effectively. It also is a good reflection of life and one's goal and purpose. Like many people will find out eventually life can be quite hard and is filled with surprises. Dreams change. Toy Story 4 shows how you can accept and deal with this gracefully.

Definitely a must watch for every human being on this planet!

The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)

The Secret Life of Pets mostly chimed in on our love for pets and how cute and funny they can be. The sequel builds on this and focuses on their adventures and life lessons.

Like the Toy Story franchise The Secret Life of Pets 2 (TSLP2) tries to do more than just show beautiful imagery. It tugs the heart strings constantly. But actually with themes that will appeal to many. TSLP2 definitely has enough to make you stop, think and be nostalgic about. However it's not without flaws. The animated film basically contains three stand alone stories that don't really connect well. It's not problematic but points out the biggest flaw of the film. That the concept doesn't have enough substance to fill 86 minutes. The stories work much better as shorts. And it's clear that these shorts have been stretched out. Therefore there will be moments where nothing really happens and they could get boring a little.

However like I said the film has a lot of heart and is filled with incredibly strong moments that will make you overlook the flaws. The eye candy and cuteness factor should also not be underestimated. The animated film is incredibly beautiful.

A must watch for every kid or kid at heart!
