My thoughts on Parasite a.k.a. Gisaengchung (2019), Miss & Mrs. Cops a.k.a. Geol Kapseu (2019) and Lying and Stealing (2019)

Here are some quick and brief thoughts on the films I have seen recently. Parasite perhaps deserves a full and proper review but I am not feeling it at the moment. So this will have to do for now.

Parasite a.k.a. Gisaengchung (2019)

Parasite, not to be confused with the anime and live action film Parasyte, has received a lot of praise and positive attention. Now, it certainly is an interesting and thoroughly entertaining film. But deserving of the praise? In that regard I think Parasite is being overrated. Sure it touches upon some themes. But it never truly explores the social economic issues or the class system that exists in South Korea. Since the whole premise of the film is based on this it seems a pretty important element to include. Instead it chose to focus on the weird and bizarre.

Best thing about Parasite is that it manages to shift sympathy or empathy from character to character. One minute you find yourself rooting for one to be condemning the same person in the next. And that I credit to the good acting. Since the characterization is lacking. You get very little to no background on the characters. In this case it would have helped the story a whole lot more.

Miss & Mrs. Cops a.k.a.
Geol Kapseu (2019)

Miss & Mrs. Cops is a different beast. It's very much in the same vein as many other South Korean action comedies although it changes it's tone to something more serious and political in the second hour. Strangely enough I was on board all the way despite the blatant and obvious feminist propaganda. Why? Because they did it in a way that appealed to the heart and it stayed close to the real issues that plague women in the work force.

Lying and Stealing (2019)

Lying and Stealing is a Theo James vehicle. He certainly has the charm and acting skills to carry a film on his own. Too bad the story is generic and bland. You can predict the whole film beat by beat. Perhaps not a problem for someone who hasn't seen enough heist or crime films. But for a veteran film fan like me it is. Surprisingly though the acting and the charm of Theo and  Ebon Moss-Bachrach (known as Micro in The Punisher) is all you gonna need to have a decent watch. Not great but adequate!
