Review The Cloverfield Paradox (2018): It went from good to intolerably bad within twenty minutes and never recovered.

genre: science fiction, horror, mystery

Everything looked and seemed promising. Even when things started to get ridiculous I found myself laughing at the absurdity of it all. I mean there was one scene so incredulous I started laughing so hard and barely could stop. BTW it's the scene with Chris O'Dowd. You will know what I am talking about in case you disregard this review. If they had stuck to this tone and vibe I would have enjoyed myself. But no, this is a J. J. Abrams production and he isn't satisfied until he gets to crush your soul.

So it then starts doing things that make no sense whatsoever. Like always he is all about artificial thrills and tension that lack emotion and substance. The actors can't be blamed for this atrocity because they are really trying hard to make it work. But how can they with such a poorly written script. It's incoherent, messy and basically doesn't connect at all to previous Cloverfield films. Originally this wasn't even part of the franchise and seemed like an afterthought to do so. Why? Probably to draw in the crowds because on it's own this film wouldn't even be made. This is proof that J. J. Abrams doesn't care about making good films. Like many others in Hollywood he is a greedy son of a bitch. He also is cheap since it looked like they re used set pieces from the reboot Star Wars films.

Another mystery is the fact actress Zhang Ziyi doesn't speak English. Her character never ever speaks in another language. Whenever people are talking to her they either speak in Chinese or speak in English to which she replies in Chinese. That would only make sense if they had some kind of translator device. By now I am sure she has picked up English so why didn't they let her speak it. It annoyed the hell out of me because I would be annoyed with that in real life too. If you are going to be part of a project and the main language is going to be English it seems logical to me you would speak it too. If the main language had been Chinese (Mandarin if I am not mistaken) then it would have made sense. But it's not so it doesn't. Did they even pick her for her acting skills? Or was she there to draw in the Chinese audience? Seeing how greed is the main motivation I would think the latter.

If you were ever in doubt about J. J. Abrams then this should convince that he is a hack. The Cloverfield Paradox is a giant waste of your time. Avoid it like the plague. This is all I am going to say about it.
