Gangster Squad is best to be enjoyed when the expectations are very low. In no way can't it be compared to gems like L.A. Confidential or The Untouchables. For that it is lacking too much sophistication, story and strong characterization. But for what it offers it is quite entertaining. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously and at a certain point it is clear the audience should not either. Some dramatic climaxes do loose some impact by poor direction which is a shame. To be fair though any development in the film is to be taken lightly and pretty consistent with the overall treatment. All of off it is made tolerable by the cast although Sean Penn was a little too evil and over the top. But even then he is very entertaining. Overall keep your expectations to the minimum and you will be able to have a pleasurable viewing experience.
