Review Preacher Season 1 (2016 - ): Totally insane but in a good way!

genre: adventure, drama, fantasy, comic book adaptation

Let me first start off by saying that I haven't read the Preacher comics so am judging this purely on it's own merit. And whether it is faithful to the comics or not it is without a doubt one of the best shows that has come out this year.

The first episode immediately sets the tone of what to expect and I was loving every second of it. It's one of the few shows where the pilot shows more than enough to make you decide if the show is for you or not. Granted it does take quite a few episodes to learn more what the characters are about and how their dynamics are but it for the most part is very consistent. The characters are constructed so well that you can tell that their actions and behaviour fall in the line of how they normally would act. Unless the plot demands otherwise of course. But point is that you really get to know the characters and that you can depend on them.  Even the shady and villainy types have been given meat and aren't straight up evil or bad. Same goes for the supposedly good characters. They are like real people who have different sides to them. Dominic Cooper is one of those actors that is always interesting and if you ask me is perfect as Jesse Custer. But like I said I have no clue whether his portrayal is true to the comics. (Do let me know!) As I understand Tulip O' Hare doesn't look anything like in the comics. But damn Ruth Negga makes one hell of an impression in her introductory scene. I instantly liked her. (Now this could be a bit bias on my part since I know her from Agents of Shield where she plays Raina. And she was very good in that show also.) Same can be said about Cassidy played by Joseph Gilgun who looks like a skinnier Justin Theroux. They easily could be brothers. (Powers that be in Hollywood. Put them together. Let them play brothers. Doesn't matter what, they will be awesome. Just saying.) The way Cassidy is introduced is just plain bad ass. Cassidy will be the one providing the most laughs. Or at least will be directly or indirectly involved in events that will make you laugh out loud. So keep an eye on him

As all good shows tend to do it got better with each episode. Preacher very superbly blends serious drama with comedy. What truly is masterful that it makes you laugh at times you normally would not laugh. But because of the sheer craziness that is going on it's hard not to. I don't think Christians will be happy with how the Christian faith is represented. However I do believe that it's not intended to insult. Actually if anything I think it's speaking in favour of the Christian faith by showing how for some it's very important and essential. Especially in the finale this is shown. But one thing you will have to realize that the show can be very graphic and extremely violent. It certainly is not for the squeamish. Just so you are aware.

The season finale is easily one of the best and craziest TV Show finales I have seen in my life. It's captivating, daring and incredibly surprising. For a while it looked like it was going a certain way to then go into another direction entirely. I can honestly say that you won't be able to predict anything that occurs in this episode. And that is just incredible for a show with supernatural elements. Often they stick to certain conventions and very rarely stray away from established mythologies. Here they at least try (and succeed) to take it to the next level. So if you haven't watched this show yet then please do so now as it is exceptionally good.
