Review Stream (2024): It has some redeeming elements, but not one I can recommend!

genre: horror, slasher

Stream is a film I watched a while ago, so I am writing this review from memory. In essence, it's a low budget C film. Heavily flawed, but with some redeeming elements.

The Keenan family are away for the weekend. Their purpose is to reconnect by recreating a fun memory of the past. This must be one of the worst moments to do so, since there are people in the hotel who have different ideas. Don't worry, not going to spoil, it's not a new concept but one that works for the most part. One thing that doesn't work is the pacing. Don't get me wrong, a lot is happening. But some events take forever to happen, especially, if you are aware they are going to happen. A film like this needs to capitalize on tension and unpredictability. In that regard, there aren't real surprises. The kills are OK, nothing memorable but while you are watching, they do deliver.

The one element that gives this film a boost is the cast of veteran (horror) actors. Dee Wallace, Tony Todd, Charles Edwin Powell, Danielle Harris, Tim Reid, Jeffrey Combs and many more. They certainly do their best to elevate their events. Although, they are let down by the direction and lack of energy. Somehow, the film lacks punch and thrills. Usually, those are the things I look for in a slasher film. It's what usually keeps events compelling and exciting. Any excitement that could be had is let down by the slowness of the film.

For me, it didn't feel like a total waste of time. There are some fun moments. But if you look at the cast and know what they are capable of and what masterpieces they have been in, you can't help but feel to be let down. So it's not really a title I can recommend. Maybe, just maybe, as a title playing in the background during Halloween.
