After Point Break, there were several films that featured extreme sports like skydiving. Drop Zone is one of them. And back in the day, I loved this film. Watched it several times. Now, after a long time, I watched it again. And I was a little disappointed.
Wesley Snipes is one of those actors that can elevate his film by his presence alone. Especially if he gives a damn. But I don't think he did when he made this. Sometimes, he is downright goofy. Perhaps he thought they would cut those scenes and director John Badham didn't care. Still, I could have tolerated Snipes in light mode had the plot and events be more thrilling. The whole film is predictable to a tee. Not a single surprise. And that also wouldn't be a problem if it at least delivered action wise.
Only the skydiving scenes are spectacular. Everything else is average. Now I am really wondering what they were thinking. To be fair, I do think that Yancy Butler helps the viewing experience. But is it enough to make it worth your while? Unfortunately, I don't think so. Gary Busy as the villain is understandable. But believable? He is usually capable of stealing the scene. Here he fails to do so.
Drop Zone is quite ridiculous and can't be taken seriously. Especially, because most of the people involved didn't care. If you have never watched it before, then maybe you will get some satisfaction. Other than that, it won't be worth your time!
