Review To Catch a Thief (1955): Decent whodunnit!

genre: mystery, thriller, whodunnit

After having rewatched some Hitchkock films I began to get a little weary. While most cinephiles swear by him, I was starting to get disappointed. I used to get thrilled by his films. Now, not so much. Could it be that is films are dated?

Well, I am happy to report that the answer to that question is a little more complicated. To Catch a Thief for example does exactly what I expect it to do. It does a good job of building up tension and suspense by having you invested in the hunt for the thief. The progression of the story might not be fast, it's not boring. The beautiful scenery and the acting definitely elevate the viewing experience.  I only wished there were more twists and turns. But the minimalistic approach in combination with Cary Grant's suave demeanour works wonders. You can't help but root for the guy. Like many people in the French Riviera, he is in the dark about what is going on. Who is this thief, who is framing him? There aren't that many suspects he can target. The beautiful women, including Grace Kelly, are very quick to call him out even when all the evidence is circumstantial. Does this prevent them from flirting with him? Of course not, because deep down, they love a bad boy. The mother of Grace |Kelly's mother even states this out loud. Sigh!

The conclusion to the mystery is not as satisfying as one would hope. Still, enough to not ruining the decent viewing experience!
