Review Last Action Hero (1993): Misunderstood and highly underrated!

genre: action, adventure, comedy

Arnold Schwarzenegger is famous for being in high octane and hardcore action films. So what if those films are mocked and at the same time are being honoured.

Like Arnold, director John McTiernan makes fun of the films he has been making, so he understands how to direct good action and point out the ridiculous things that are featured in those action flicks. In this film, he ups the ante and gives them a comedic twist. For some reason, a majority of the fans of the action genre didn't get the memo and were thinking Last Action Hero would be a serious action film. And in a way it is. There are many moments in the film where action cinema in general is put on a pedestal. For Danny it's the best way to escape and cope with reality. And there are some scenes where things get nasty and brutal for him, where no one is there to rescue and save him. Even his mother doesn't leave her job after he got robbed.

Nick, his friend, offers him the whole cinema so that Danny can relax and enjoy Jack Slater films. Slater (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) has his own take on cinema. So very understandable that Danny is in awe of him. Then Nick decides to give Danny this magical ticket who enables him to enter the world of Jack Slater. Here he is introduced to a world of a lot of recognizable characters and references to films. Even to ones where other actors were once considered but then got replaced by Arnold. Like the fact that Sylvester Stallone was considered to star in The Terminator. Just imagine what consequences that would have. Last Action Hero goes there. In that regard, Last Action Hero is a must-watch for film fans.

But I think the film goes deeper than that. It sincerely tries to honour the action heroes played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis etc. Even if they are mostly fantastical creations, there is something real about them. They can and will be able to do amazing things when you believe in them. It's that one magical part that makes them heroes.

Overall, this film is a must own for film fans like me but in general one that at least should be watched once.
