The Divine Fury is a film I have attempted to watch several times, but each time something came in between. Few months ago, I finally got the chance to do watch and enjoy the film and let me tell you that I was very happy I did.
The Divine Fury is a tiny bit different from other exorcist films, since it's more action orientated. That isn't that surprising within the context of the film, since the lead is a world-champion MMA fighter. Apparently he is blessed with some exorcist powers and he wants to get rid of them. But Father Ahn was ecstatic that he dropped in when he did because it made his life easier. It takes Yong Hoo a while to warm up to the idea. But once committed, he is like an A grade superhero fighting demons a la Bleach.
I like how the action doesn't detract from the horror elements. Those may not be super prevalent, when they occur the horror is full on. This convinces Yong Hoo to do what he can to fight evil, since it's unrelenting. The only real gripe I have with this film is the pacing. Especially, in the beginning. I get that they are trying to build up the characters and the dynamics between them, which is rewarding. The problem is that the main plot itself is too simple for the runtime. It easily could have been shortened and giving you a much better viewing experience. That being said, once I finally was able to sit down and watch the film with the attention it deserved, I was rewarded for my time.
So overall, this is one I can recommend. Compared to Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman (2023) for example, this one is vastly superior!
