Review xXx: State of the Union (2005): Everything the original should have been!

genre: action, adventure, espionage

Make no mistake, xXx: State of the Union is also a bad film like the original only to the extent that it is good. The film goes to heights the original never went which is embracing the over the top chaos and mayhem. Ice Cube understood this and he brings the attitude and humour that was needed.

In no way should you take this film seriously. The film moves along in a nice fast pace and doesn't waste time with unnecessary plot elements. The whole plot and characterization is in function of the action, as it should be with films like these. Willem Dafoe, Peter Strauss and Samuel L. Jackson give this film some credibility to counterbalance the ridiculousness that is going on. And let me tell you, things go crazy real fast. The good crazy though, since every event in this film is spectacular and fun. Funny how director Lee Tamahori (The Devil's Double) failed to do the same with Die Another Day where he might have gone a little too far, but perhaps that wasn't entirely his fault. I really am curious if the end result is as he had intended. There aren't that many interviews or article about that but who knows maybe one day I will find out. In any case, no matter how over the top the action is in this flick, it never reaches a point where you think: " That looks awful ". For some reason, the CGI is contained or at least made to look as real as possible. Apart from the train. But even then I was able to suspend disbelief very easily. Something I simply could not with Die Another Day

Another thing I want to point out is that not once does this film pretend more than it is. It never takes itself too seriously and is very aware of what it has to deliver. This is the kind of film that they barely make these days. There used to be a time were very regularly a B action flick would come out, and you could enjoy for the fun it was providing. A nice distraction, nothing more and nothing less.

I guess the producers of the first xXx have learned from their mistakes concerning the original and embraced the cheese as much as possible, and the result is an incredible fun action flick.
