Final Destination 3 (2006)
In essence, this part offers more of the same. But where the deaths become so much more unlikely. Almost everything is a death trap. Or almost every object in sight is faulty or broken. Here, more than in the predecessors, you are asked to suspend disbelief. You need to keep doing that for every part after, otherwise you are going to have a hard time of enjoying these films.
I think with Mary Elizabeth Winstead they found a good lead who strikes a balance between the Alex Browning character from the first and the Kimberly Corman character from the second. I wished I could say the same of how events transpire. It's not the deaths themselves. They are easily the highlights. It's when they take place. It definitely feels a lot slower than the previous films, and that is never a good thing.
While the earlier films weren't really that scary or creepy, they did offer some suspense. Here, the suspense is almost lacking. Overall, still fun.
The Final Destination (2009)
Like with many films made around 2009 3D was huge. So naturally this franchise jumped on that bandwagon. I myself did not have the pleasure to watch this in 3D, but some sequences did look promising. And if there is ever a genre that benefits from 3D, surely that is the horror genre.
In general, this part is considered the weakest in the franchise. I tend to agree, since this is the shortest of them all and still feels like the longest. I think, it is here where they really lost the creativity to come up with new deaths and are basically rehashing earlier deaths with a spin to them. Did that matter to me? No, I still laughed my ass off so, it's all good.
This film is heavily flawed, perhaps could have been a bit stronger had Mykelti Williamson been given the lead. He clearly is the best actor in the film, and he elevates every scene he is involved in. They actually really did him wrong, but glad that he was in the film.
Overall, at this point, you are a fan. You know what to expect and what you are watching this for. You can't possibly complain about this being bad. So yes, it's all about the deaths and like I said, it's all good!
Final Destination 5 (2011)
At this point in the franchise, it must have been hard to come up with an opening sequence that is relatable to people. So, I guess, they decided to not even try. This one is real far-fetched and ridiculous. In the sense that it will be hard to suspend disbelief. And yet I did, since like always, these films do deliver on those crazy deaths.
One example, is the death involving the gymnastics girl. To be fair, this is a pretty suspenseful sequence where they go crazy pointing out all the dangers and things that could go wrong. They don't at those specific moments, they do at the most pivotal moment, and it's here where she falls to her death. In such a way, I laughed so hard. But also was like, hey hang on, that's not possible. She had broken her bones in places that couldn't even been broken that way. Come on people. I know that for the most part, this franchise is very cartoonish. At least ground it somewhat in reality.
This part does offer one twist plot wise. Not entirely sure if I am liking it. I will need to think about it. For now, it's one that might add to the viewing experience. To me, the most memorable was the compilation of deaths at the end. One of the best examples of fan service in cinema history.
Overall, of course you are going to watch this part if you like the franchise. Only non fans will complain. And let them. They don't know what they are talking about!
