Normally, I would have watched the original first, but I was too curious to see what a modern take would be like. Since I thought this was a remake. Well, I was wrong. This is a sequel.
The premise of the film may sound familiar. Remember the film Speed? If the bus slowed down to a certain speed, the bus would explode. In this film, the same goes for the Bullet Train. And to be fair, that is all I wanted. Because that already is pretty thrilling. I do have to state the following. People seem to think that this film copied Speed. This is false. If anything, Speed might have stolen the premise from the original The Bullet Train (1975). You can be assured that I am definitely going to watch this one as soon as I can. If only to see how it holds up.
The film doesn't waste time to set the premise up. It was pretty exciting and thrilling for the first half hour. Then somehow the film lost steam. In large part because a lot of the threat was diminished. That and the fact that the focus shifted. Had this shift offered something more thrilling, I would have applauded it. Unfortunately, it's here where the film fails the audience. The antagonist and the motive are weak. Even if what is stated is repulsive. That still doesn't give that someone the right to terrorize people. I really wished filmmakers would do their best to write better villains in this regard. In a way, you need to give them motivations a lot of people can stand behind to make them a little more sympathetic. Such things would make events more compelling. As it was, I barely cared. In fact, at one point I even agreed with the politicians. That's never a good thing.
I was expecting a non-stop thrill ride, and I what I got in return was some sort of plead for people with psychological issues. As much as I agree with this notion, I don't want this in my disaster films. Overall, I would say this is a film best suited on a rainy Sunday. But not one I can recommend!
