Review The Great Escape (1963) (Classic Movies)

genre: war, drama, action, adventure

This movie was so different then other war movies. It actually showed what happened after soldiers got captured by the Germans. I like the fact that they do not depict all the Germans as bad human beings. And that they made clear that there was a distinction between the German army and Hitler’s force. Most of the regular army weren’t too happy with Hitler. And that fact is not shown often in movies. Or not often enough. The Great Escape is a real visual treat with an all star cast. The all star cast (Steve McQueen, James Garner, James Coburn, Charles Bronson and many others) bring the characters to live and make everything very believable. It is fun to see them do everything they can to escape their prison. Escpecially when it comes to Steve McQueen. The scenes where he returns to his cell playing ball after another failed attempt in escaping are classic. But there are many scenes like that. Overall the balance between drama, comedy and action is perfect. The Great Escape is a masterpiece pure and simple.
