Review The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017): A decent time waster but very forgettable!

genre: action, comedy

This poster is a spoof on The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner
and Whitney Houston. This could imply that the film itself
is a spoof as well. It's not!

Normally I don't do this too often but let me give you the skinny right here right now. The Hitman's Bodyguard is a comedic buddy action flick that gives you what it is supposed to. It will make you laugh and has some good action in it. I wished I could say all of it is memorable. But it's not. Now with that out of the way I can focus on what makes The Hitman's Bodyguard enjoyable and what not.

If you know what Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson are good at then you already have a pretty good idea what they bring to the table. Their dynamics is what makes the film appealing. The banter between them is pretty funny. However the film never tries to deviate from the old school formula like for example The Nice Guys did do. So you will have to be content with the usual jokes and that could get old real fast. It didn't bother me since I had set my expectations real low. Somewhere in a comment I read that this is the Deadpool versus Nick Fury film fans were hoping for. I wasn't aware that was a thing but let's say it is then I do feel compelled to say that you really ought to get that out of your head. Because both Reynolds and Jackson are on automatic pilot. They are adequate but nothing to get totally excited about. The only one that truly brought out the crazy was Salma Hayek. She clearly was having fun as the incredibly passionate and volatile wife of Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson).

Some of the action was good but there were also some sequences that were so average that it made me wonder why they were left in. It was very unnecessary for this film to be as long as it was. With twenty minutes cut it would have been a faster paced film and much more pleasant to watch. As it is now it has the tendency to be repetitive. I don't know if they were aiming for this to be an old school buddy movie. But if that is the case they have succeeded. It easily outdoes 2 Guns I saw a few weeks ago. Action wise this could be a let down. So keep that in mind.
