Review Wreck-It Ralph (2012): Full of heart!

genre: animation, comedy

Wreck-It Ralph is very similar to Toy Story 3 where it paid tribute and embraced the nostalgia. But at the same time made it appealing for a broad public. The target audience however is the older gamer or the retro gamer. Especially in connection to Ralph himself.

Ralph lives in an old arcade game and seems to be modeled or inspired by Donkey Kong like Fix-it Felix his nemesis is inspired by Mario. But there are so many references to old and new video games that it becomes a joy to spot them. Even people not really familiar with the games will have a blast since the story is universal and gripping. Sure underdog stories have been done to death but those are the kind that somehow rarely tire and in relation to video games it gets that extra edge. I do have to remark that at a certain point the movie loses steam and drags a little but manages to pick up the pace and brings it back on top. There were moments where I was expecting more deeper jokes when references are made to some of the video games but I guess that would be lost on the non gamer who must be a little puzzled by the concept in general. While Rich Moore knows his stuff and makes it appealing to a wider audience he can't prevent that some people simply won't understand the references. Little kids might be fooled by the sweetness, cuteness and bright coloring like for example in the world of Sugar Rush. But older kids and adults who have no interest in video games whatsoever or simply are tired of the underdog story might find it hard to like the events displayed on the screen. Even though there is plenty to please if one is willing since there is a nice variation in comedy, action and drama.

One thing is clear though Wreck-It Ralph is full off heart and definitely one of the best animation films made in 2012. Perhaps even the best video game movie so far. A must watch for people who love video games!

Great review. It's a conventional story, but has plenty of heart and fun for it's characters that it's almost too hard to not have a good time with it all.
